Dr. Lukale Patroba Omukuyia
Pre & Post-Operative Care
Thorough care is provided throughout the entire surgical journey — from the initial assessment and surgical planning, through to recovery and long-term follow-up.
Pre-Operative Assessment
Before any surgery, a comprehensive pre-operative evaluation is conducted to ensure fitness for the procedure and to minimise risks. This typically includes:
- Detailed medical history and clinical examination
- Blood tests — full blood count, clotting, kidney and liver function
- Imaging — ultrasound, CT scan or X-ray where needed
- ECG and chest X-ray for major procedures
- Review of current medications
- Anaesthetic assessment
Preparing for Your Surgery
Specific instructions will be provided before your procedure. General preparation guidelines include:
- Fasting — no food or water for 6–8 hours before surgery
- Medication — some medications may need to be paused (your surgeon will advise)
- Arrange transport — you will not be able to drive after a general anaesthetic
- Bring a support person if possible
- Follow any bowel preparation instructions if given
Post-Operative Recovery
After surgery, the surgical and nursing team will monitor recovery closely. Post-operative care includes:
- Pain management — appropriate analgesia to keep you comfortable
- Wound care — dressing changes and signs of infection to watch for
- Activity guidance — when to resume normal activities
- Dietary advice — especially after bowel or abdominal surgery
- Follow-up appointments — to review healing and remove sutures if needed
Warning Signs After Surgery
Contact your surgical team promptly if you experience any of the following after discharge:
- Increasing pain not controlled by prescribed medication
- Redness, swelling, discharge or opening of the wound
- High fever (above 38.5°C)
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain
- Swelling or pain in the legs (possible DVT)
- Nausea, vomiting or inability to eat or drink
